Traffic Designer IV – District Four / Transportation Dev elopement / Highway Design / Traffic Design

 

This position will o versee / coordinate the development and preparation of detailed component plans and specifications for signing and pavement markings, signalization, and lighting plans, utilizing computer aided drafting and design (CADD). This position will also prepare technical highway signing and pavement marking, signalization, and lighting component plans.

Annual Salary Range:

$66,638.06 - $86,237.48

A Competitive Area Differential (CAD) additive in the amount of $1,976.00 will be added to the annual salary.

 

Your Specific Responsibilities:

Oversees / coordinates the development and preparation of detailed component plans and specifications for signing and pavement markings, signalization, and lighting plans, utilizing computer aided drafting and design (CADD). Includes the design of signal head assemblies, railroad preemptions, signal system layouts, No Passing Zone Studies (NPZ), Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), and overhead and ground-mounted signs with the use of utility conflict reports in phase reviews.

Prepares technical highway signing and pavement marking, signalization, and lighting component plans. Utilizes current Department highway design, signing and pavement marking, signalization, and lighting software, standards, and criteria. Performs Quality Assurance/Control reviews as required to ensure plans have been developed in accordance with appropriate design criteria, policy and procedures.

Coordinates all major activities required to design traffic control devices, traffic signal systems, and lighting systems. Responsible for acquiring all necessary information needed to select acceptable and economically feasible solutions and identifies potential problems as well as providing solutions to those problems. Obtains input pertinent to local requirements and ordinances from municipalities and other governmental agencies. Assists in project management, field reviews and field evaluation, data collection, Local Agency Program (LAP) reviews, customer service request documentation, existing location of traffic control devices and any conflicts with proposed design elements determination and report preparation.

Develops and updates project schedules with minimal supervision. Provides training to designers in the design and development of signing and pavement marking, signalization, lighting plans, overhead guide signs, ground mounted signs using appropriate computer software, Traffic Management Sites, and multi-post signs. Assists supervisor concerning design related issues.

Provides technical expertise of the design process as a primary member in a design group. Guide and support junior designers in the completion of engineering assignments related to design processes, criteria evaluation scope development and accurate estimate creation. Reviews shop drawings thoroughly and maintains shop drawing files. Serves on Technical Review Committee (TRC) in consultant acquisition and Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for consultant design bid build, design/build projects, and alternative contracting. Assists in the development of scope of services and staff hours negotiations.

The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

 

Knowledge of:

  • concepts, terminologies, design principles and analytical techniques of highway design
  • computer aided drafting and design (CADD) tools and automated office products
  • project engineering and scheduling
  • interpretation of design standards, specifications and criteria established or adopted `by Florida Department of Transportation

 

Skilled in:

  • the engineering process for production of highway construction plans
  • the use of manual on uniform traffic control devices
  • communicating technical information verbally and in writing
  • planning, organizing, and managing multiple work assignments

 

Ability to:

  • establish and maintain effective internal and external working relationships
  • apply engineering quantitative techniques in the area of highway design
  • solve engineering related problems
  • use a personal computer (pc)
  • train and guide designers in the design process
  • be an active part of a group.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent and four years of continuous employment experience. Post-secondary education can substitute for the required years of experience on a year-for-year basis.
