Business Agent / Union Representative

Teamsters Local 481 is hiring a Business Agent / Union Representative to serve our membership in the San Diego-area.

Teamsters Local 481 represents 4,000 members in diverse industries including the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, warehousing, parking and valet services, healthcare, and more.

Description of Duties

• Work independently to represent members and enforce contracts
• Investigate, prepare and present grievances 
• Train members and union stewards on contract enforcement and union rights
• Implement the union’s mobilization and communication program with internal organizing, organizing around workplace issues, member one-on-one’s, craft meetings, and more
• Welcome new members and provide in-person orientations with emphasis on building a stronger union
• Support and direct contract campaigns and participate in contract negotiations
• Attend and assist in organizing general and special membership meetings; Attend community meetings and political events
• Prepare and submit regular and ad hoc reports on representational activities
• Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

• Experience in the labor movement or community organizing
• Strong interpersonal communication skills, public speaking skills and experience communicating union messages
• Computer proficiency with database/spreadsheet, email, internet, word processing, & social media 
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Excellent listening, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
• Spanish-language proficiency a plus
• Ability to work collaboratively with our team of Business Agents, officers, stewards, and active members
• Ability to work irregular hours including weekends
• Valid driver’s license, auto insurance, and automobile for business use is required

Compensation
Teamsters Local 481 offers competitive salary commensurate with work experience. The salary range for this position is $85,000 – $115,000. In addition, generous healthcare and retirement benefits, and a car allowance are provided.
